John Gillett trained at the Actors Workshop in London, and then worked widely in television, radio, independent film and theatre. He has acted in many regional repertories, fringe and touring theatre, the West End and other London theatres, including the Royal Court and the Young Vic. 

 

   John has taught at many drama schools, including East 15 – where he ran the Postgraduate Acting Course for three years - Arts Educational, Mountview, Identity, Rose Bruford College, NAFA in Singapore, Italia Conti BA Acting Course, RADA, Central School of Speech and Drama, Guildford School of Acting, and Dorset School of Acting. He has directed productions for schools, and at the ICA, Lilian Baylis Theatre at Sadler’s Wells, Stratford Circus, the Arcola, the Drill Hall, and the White Bear, including The Crucible and Death of a Salesman, Othello, Hamlet, Coriolanus, ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Measure for Measure, Yerma and The House of Bernarda Alba, Tom Jones, Their Very Own and Golden City, The Machine Breakers, The Accrington Pals, Summerfolk, Widows, Frida and Diego: A Love Story, A Warwickshire Testimony, and Sleeping Dogs. John has also run acting workshops at the RSC and the Actors Centre, and co-ran Spark Theatre Company and Re:Actors Theatre Group.

  His writing includes Acting on Impulse (Methuen Drama, 2007); Acting Stanislavski - A practical guide to Stanislavski’s approach and legacy (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2014); and, with Christina Gutekunst, Voice into Acting - Integrating voice and the Stanislavski approach (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2014). He has also made contributions to two editions of the Stanislavski Studies journal, and written the Preface to the new Bloomsbury Revelations edition of Stanislavski’s Creating a Role.
